PROGRESS BEING MADE ON THE CITY'S NEW WATERWORKS. Lining the High-Service Reservoir With Concrete. « * Commence Laying Wooden Pipe Today. Q RATIFYING progress Is being made on the city's new, Cedar river wfcter system. City Engineer Thomson, who re turned yesterday from an inspection tour of the entire line where work is heing done, says that the weather has been more than ordinarily favorable for good work this winter, and that line progress has been made. A large crew of men is putting In the lining of the high-service reservoir. All the excavating for this depository has been finißhed, and a fifth of tho lining is completed. Part of the bottom and side margins is covered with cement. In the margin of the reservoir the foundations for the gatehouse have been laid, and some of the large valves are in place. The contractors will begin laying wooden water pipes this afternoon. These are staves securely bound with steel, and will be used in the hills and other places where the pressure Is light. Twenty-two miles pf this kind of pipe will be used. Ail but five and three-quarter miles of the forty-two-inch steel pipe Is In place, leaving only one mile to' be fin ished. The pipe shown in the illustration is in Twelfth avenue, immediately south of the South school, and had to sus tain a pressure of 173 pounds to the square inch. Both ends of the pipe are closed, and through the small hose appear ing in tho photograph water was forced In at varying pressures all the way from 110 to 275 pounds to the inch. The at tendant is standing by watching the indicator which shows the pressure being exerted on the pipe. LINING THE HIGH-SERVICE RESERVOIR WITH CONCRETE. TESTING A FORTY-TWO-INCH STEEL PIPE. |

THE BRITISH GUN THAT PUT "LONG TOM" OUT OF ACTION. THE British forces In Natat ware deficient In heavy artillery, that of the Boers outclassing them In every respect, and had It not been tor the prompt arrival of the naval brigade from Durban, th® British reverses would have been more severe In the mnny engagements had with the Boers In the vicinity of Dadysmlth. Our photograph shows the brigade from H. M. 8. Powerful in action at the battle before Ladysmlth. The big 4.'7 gun, mounted on Capt. Scott's land service carriage, successfully shelled the Boers' position, and put out of action several of their big guns. Including "Long Tom," which was doing considerable damage to the town. This brigade, under command of Capt. Lambton, of the Powerful, was in the thick of the battle at Ladysmlth, and has rendered valuable service In several other engage ments since. |
